ABOUT DR JOHAN VAN BELJON
DR JOHAN VAN BELJON – SPECIALIST SURGEON
Dr Johan van Beljon is a graduate of the University of Pretoria. After completing a BSc degree majoring in Human Physiology & Microbiology, he went on to complete an Honours degree in Human Physiology, while doing research under the supervision of Prof Dion du Plessis, the then head of the department of Urology (UP). During this time, he was also part of the Medical Research Council study group on cell biology.
Dr van Beljon completed his medical degree in 1994 (Surgery Cum laude). During his studies, he realised that surgery was his passion and proceeded to complete his post graduate studies in 2000, obtaining both a master’s degree (MMED (Surg)) and a Fellowship in Surgery (FCS (SA)).
In 2001, he was accepted to the Upper GIT unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, to work under world-renowned surgeons Professor PC Bornman and Professor J Krige. During this stint, he super-specialized in the field of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery.
SURGICAL PRACTICE
On his return to Pretoria, Dr van Beljon joined the Department of Surgery as a full-time consultant. A few years later, he opened his own surgical practice at Netcare Montana Hospital.
Dr van Beljon has extensive experience in lecturing and training of students, at both pre and post graduate level. He has visited various surgery departments all over the world, including the Department of Surgery at Oxford University. He has also attended, lectured at and organized several professional congresses and written and published in various medical journals.
SPECIAL INTERESTS
Dr van Beljon’s main field of interest is Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery and he offers both open and laparoscopic surgery. He has completed more than 4 000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, over 200 Whipple procedures and more than 200 liver resections. He also has a special interest in other major and complex cancer surgeries.
Although Dr van Beljon specializes in HPB Surgery, he also offers general surgeries. He prides himself on offering state-of-the-art treatment and an honest opinion.

Dr van Beljon is committed to a multidisciplinary team approach, which typically includes an anaesthetist, a physician, a radiologist, a physiotherapist and a dietician. Each patient benefits from a treatment regime that is specific to their needs.
